Great Immigrants, Great Stories: Carnegie Corporation of New York Celebrates

What Immigrants Give Back to America July 4th Public Service Ad, Website Honor Notable Immigrants

NEW YORK, July 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Immigrants who become naturalized citizens are central to the story of America, and this July 4th, Carnegie Corporation of New York once again celebrates immigrants whose achievements have helped enrich the fabric of our nation.

This Independence Day, as it has every year since 2006, the Corporation has commissioned a full-page public service ad in The New York Timessaluting immigrants who have contributed to the strength of American democracy and the vitality of our national life.

"When immigrants take the oath to become American citizens, that is both a wonderful and a powerful act," said Vartan Gregorian, President of Carnegie Corporation of New York and himself a naturalized citizen. "Hence, it is fitting that on July 4th, when we commemorate the birth of our nation, we also honor both the rights and responsibilities of citizenship: not only the freedom to pursue our personal goals but also our obligation to contribute to the collective good and participate in the progress of our society."
The 43 naturalized citizens featured in the ad include author Jamaica Kincaid and visual artist Shirin Neshat; philanthropy leader Aso Tavitian; journalists Doualy Xaykaothao and Mohamad Bazzi; scholars Shibley Telhami and Nina Khrushcheva; scientist Joanna Wysocka; jurist Sri Srinivasan, business and technology leaders Sebastian Thrun and Safra Catz, and U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono. Carnegie Corporation's founder, steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, an immigrant from Scotland, was committed to giving back to America and mankind.

This year, Carnegie Corporation is also launching a companion website, "Great Immigrants: The Pride of America," at greatimmigrants.carnegie.org, which includes this year's honorees and those celebrated in previous years. The site also features a timeline [http://greatimmigrants.carnegie.org/timeline/] highlighting Andrew Carnegie's experiences as an immigrant.

Everyone has stories of great immigrants, and on the website, the Corporation hopes people everywhere will become inspired to add their own—sharing how they or their families came to America, with an emphasis on their accomplishments and contributions as Americans. The Corporation also hopes the discussion will continue on Twitter with the hashtag #greatimmigrants.

MKOABIOLA.org Website Launched to Immortalize the Man Widely Hailed as Nigeria's Greatest Statesman

LONDON, July 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

To mark the 15th anniversary of Moshood Abiola's death the website invites all those touched by his life and story to contribute to building a virtual wall of remembrance.

July 7th 2013 will commemorate the death of the first man to be elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a free, fair and peaceful election. The MKOABIOLA.org website has started the process of answering a long overdue call to immortalize the African icon, and its creators are now seeking the participation of the millions of people touched by the life and story of Moshood Abiola, in order to build a more complete resource on his life. The website and archive was launched by his children, in July 2012 and documents the life of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. The website currently features some documents that have not been seen in public, rare video footage and audio recordings. The facts shared give audiences an opportunity to reach their own conclusion about a sometimes controversial man that greatly impacted Nigeria, as well as many countries on the African continent.

The website chronicles the life of MKO Abiola, whilst serving as an archive of educational information and insight into the politician, philanthropist, pan-Africanist, and entrepreneur all in the person of Moshood Abiola. The collected body of work adds to a history that is continuously remembered and recounted by Africans far and wide. Whilst the website serves to immortalize one of the most prominent figures in Nigeria's history, it also provides clues as to why the African nation has not resurged from its tumultuous past.
This website comes at a critical juncture in Nigeria's history, and by recalling Moshood Abiola's unique ability to bridge Nigeria's numerous ethnic and religious divides, it serves as a reminder of the fact that unity is possible in Nigeria, and fragmentation and violence is by no means a foregone conclusion.

Girl Rising Coming To Nigeria On Friday October 11!

Millions saw the CNN premiere of 10x10's groundbreaking new film Girl Rising on Saturday 22 June and when it premiered on March 7th on the eve of International Women’s Day, and has since been screened at hundreds of theaters around the U.S.A and thousands organizing on demand screenings around the World and it is our turn in Nigeria to see this awesome film directed by Academy Award-Nominated Director Richard E. Robbins on Friday October 11, 2013, to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. The film will be shown at selected theaters in Lagos and Port Harcourt.
The following is the story behind the film byAnnie Scudder, PopSugar of Fox News Magazine

Have you heard about "Girl Rising"? If not, let me introduce you to an engaging and emotional movie that will teach you a lot about girls' education. The project began when a team of veteran journalists decided to investigate one question: how do you end global poverty? Girls' education always came up, no matter whom they asked, and they knew there was a story to tell. But while data show when you educate a girl you can change a community, they struggled with how to get people to recognize and act on the opportunity. So they created 10x10, a social action campaign dedicated to getting the word out, and the film Girl Rising.

A Movie Like No Other
With the help of Oscar-nominated director Richard Robbins, corporate sponsor Intel, and a handful of NGOs on the ground, Girl Rising became a movie like no other. It's not a documentary, nor fiction, but a powerful piece of storytelling. Girl Rising follows nine real girls from different developing countries who each has overcome common barriers to education, including sex trafficking, child slavery, or early marriage. The filmmakers asked award-winning writers to each create a vignette about the girl from her own country. Those stories were then used as the screenplay and narrated by famous actresses. And in the film, each girl, not a professional, acts out her own story.

Help From Famous Women
According to Holly Gordon, the film's executive director and executive producer, Girl Rising was first imagined as a classic documentary. But when the original footage only captured the dark and depressing side of poverty, they decided to get creative to convey a hopeful message. After selecting award-winning writers, they next looked for the actresses to lend their voices to the project. "We asked actresses who had already given themselves to the rights of women and girls," Holly told me. The first person they asked? Meryl Streep. "I got the phone call in July, when I was on a Bolt Bus from New York to Washington, that Meryl Streep had said yes, and I shrieked with glee," Holly recalled. "When you have Meryl Streep on board, others know that's a stamp of approval for your project." Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys, Selena Gomez, and more soon jumped on.

To learn more and see the trailer, just keep reading.

The Plan For Action
The film's makers and other backers hope it has an impact beyond the movie theater, and they've set up a process to make that happen. The first goal is to make sure as many people as possible see the film. 10x10 partnered with Gathr, which lets you request and attend theater screenings that otherwise would not be available in your area. They're also showing Girl Rising to crucial policy influencers. Producer Holly explained: "We screened a chapter at Davos, and there were tears and applause and a line around the corner to talk to the folks who were there representing Girl Rising. In a few weeks, we'll be showing the film at the World Bank to an annual meeting of global leaders around the world."

I also spoke with Shelly Esque, president of the Intel Foundation, an important partner of Girl Rising. She explained the movie will also be paired with practical policy advice. Intel is creating tool kits that countries can use to assess their policies for girls. They're also going to hold action-plan workshops in various countries. While the team works on the international release, Shelly said, "We've been able to show it in a couple countries. For instance, in Uganda we showed it with just a small group, and the first lady of Uganda. She immediately said, 'I'm forming a task force on girls' education.'" It's clearly in each country's interest, Shelly explained, considering, "just another 10 percent of girls staying in secondary school another year raises a country's GDP by 3 percent."

What You Can Do
There's also a call to action for everyday women who are moved by the film. 10x10 wants you to donate to its fund or directly to its NGO partners who work for girls' education, which include Girl Up, Partners in Health, Room to Read, La Pietra Coalition, Pratham, Plan, World Vision, Care, and Girls Learn International. Holly told me, "If you want to donate and know that you made a difference, you can go to girlrising.com." She also suggests holding a book club that explores these issues or throwing a bake sale to raise money for your local women's and girls' organizations. "What we'd like is that your action reaches more people or raises more money."

As for how the nine girls in the movie feel about it, Holly said they're "a little mystified" their stories are being told. But Holly says the girls are not necessarily extraordinary. "They're determined. They're full of hope and courage. But we found that again and again. The idea of the film is to highlight these girls as representative of the 66 million girls who aren't in school today."

"When the World is in Chaos, Give Me a Hero"

THE ONE celebrates its second year honouring the heroes of tomorrow

HONG KONG, July 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Rotary International District 3450( http://www.theonerotary3450.org ) continues to honour the world's unsung heroes and healers with its life-changing International Humanitarian Award, THE ONE.

Conceptualised and founded by Immediate Past District Governor (2011-2012) David Harilela, THE ONE is dedicated to finding the hero of all heroes. Tired of waking up to news of violence, pain and suffering, Mr. Harilela was inspired to offset this negativity by drawing attention to the goodness of mankind that still exists in the world. It was the story of Dr. Hendrick Wuebben, a true angel who gave selflessly to serve the impoverished of Nambia, which drove Mr. Harilela to establish an award to honour and promote the pure goodness that continues to reside in the hearts of many. THE ONE Award seeks to find and empower people like Dr. Wuebben, unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to alleviating pain, suffering, poverty and hunger.

THE ONE was created with the intention to honour an individual who is the epitome of the compassion and selflessness that lives within us all. Inspired by the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self," THE ONE is an individual who dedicates his or her daily life to serving others and helping those in need. Now in its second year, THE ONE has received applicants from over 20 countries thanks to a contingent of 100 global representatives in over 30 countries who scour the world to find the tomorrow's leading humanitarians.
To celebrate its second year, THE ONE Award Gala Dinner was held on the 6th of June 2013 at The Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Hong Kong. As one of the highlights on this year's social calendar, the gala was attended by leading members of the community and local celebrities including THE ONE Ambassador Donnie Yen Ji-Dan and his wife Cissy Wang, Michael Wong and Janet Ma, David & Mahnaz Lee, supermodel Qi Qi, former Miss Chinese International Sharon Kwok and power couple Anthony and Jocelyn Sandstrom who were MCs for the evening. The four finalists were also flown in especially for the event.
Donnie Yen Ji-Dan has served as THE ONE Ambassador since the Award's inception in 2012. His compassion and dedication for helping Rotary International District 3450 find the heroes of our world has been instrumental to THE ONE Award's success. Regarding his choice to become involved with THE ONE, Donnie says, "In our society, there are so many problems that we face. Having the compassion to help others around you, regardless of how wealthy you are, I believe that is what it means to be a hero."

The winner of THE ONE award will receive US$100,000 to further their respective humanitarian cause and service projects, while the 3 remaining finalists will be awarded with US$50,000 each by our major award donor, The Peter Bennett Foundation. The winner's reward of US$100,000 has been generously endowed by respected Hong Kong businessman and Chairman and Founder of Noble Group, Richard Samuel Elman. The winner will also receive THE ONE Trophy created especially by David Harilela and sponsored and brought to life by the artistry of Baccarat.

Nominations for the award were received from Rotary's powerful network of over 1.2 million people in countries spanning the globe from Asia to Africa. The panel of judges featured top professionals from the local community as well as journalists, professors and experts working in the micro-finance field for the third world countries. All judging was completed based on an explicit list of Award Criteria. In order to be eligible for the award, candidates must (1) provide outstanding and remarkable services to mankind, (2) demonstrate daily dedication to the improvement of mankind, (3) demonstrate a continued devotion to humanitarian efforts, (4) work to the highest standard of good, (5) act with compassion and kindness, and (6) promote integrity, goodwill and peace through his or her humanitarian efforts.

In order to ensure a fair and rigorous judging process, the Organising Committee has established a three-tiered judging system. Judges in all three panels are comprised of volunteers who have signed confidentiality agreements. The initial screening panel is comprised of Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotary Peace Fellows and representatives from local and international NGOs. They are tasked with selecting the top twelve applicants that will move on to the Senior Rotarian Panel. This panel is comprised of Past District Governors of Rotary International District 3450. The top four candidates from this round advance to the Final Judging Panel which consists of significant guests both within and outside of rotary. Among the final judging panel are: Past Rotary International Director Sushil Gupta; Formerly Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat, Ms. Pauline Ng; Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr. T. Brian Stevenson; THE ONE major award Donor, Mr. Peter Bennett; and THE ONE Founding Award Donor, Richard Samuel Elman.

The final four finalists, along with their inspiring stories, were revealed in May and include: Christina Noble who works in Vietnam and Mongolia; Dr. Cynthia Maung from Myanmar; Enrico Sala who works extensively in Cambodia; and Valerie Ann Taylor whose cause is in Bangladesh.
THE ONE is proud to announce Valerie Ann Taylor as THE ONE Winner 2013. A British born physiotherapist and humanitarian, Valerie Ann Taylor was granted Bangladeshi citizenship in 1998 for her 43 years of selfless sacrifice to the poor and the disabled. Appalled at the neglect and maltreatment of those who were paralysed by spinal injury or disease, Valerie established the Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in 1979, where 15,000 outpatients are treated every year. CRP also works to reduce accidents and provides schooling and vocational training for patients. To empower the community, Valerie established the Bangladesh Health Professions Institute to train medical personnel.

Her compassion truly knows no bounds, as Valerie became a legal guardian to two girls, Joyti and Poppy, who had been disowned due to their disabilities. Though she is often called the Mother Theresa of Bangladesh, Valerie speaks modestly that, "I am just very simple plain old Valerie Taylor. Never in our wildest dreams would we have realized that one day we would be able to offer a service to this number of people."

THE ONE Organising Committee traveled to Lisbon, Portugal in the end of June to promote THE ONE at the 104th Rotary International Convention. THE ONE 2014 will be held on the 14th of July, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile and applications for the 2014 Award are out now.
For more information, or to nominate a candidate, please visit THE ONE website at www.theonerotary3450.org.

Ombatse Series: Gov Al-Makura’s Manhunt for the Head of Baba Alakyo and Congratulations from Plateau Elders

Chief Priest of Ombatse, Chief Ala Agu, has blamed the governor for the attack, saying that the governor never called him for dialogue before sending troops to kill him for no just cause. Agu denied killing the policemen, saying that his god killed them before arriving Eggon.

Ombatse Series 1: Gov Al-Makura’s Manhunt for the head of Baba Alakyo and Congratulations from Plateau Elders

 ~ By Obinna Akukwe

Since the Ombatse Cult of Nasarrawa State murdered over one hundred Nigerian Police and State Security Service personnel on manhunt for  the head of Baba Alakyo , Governor Al-Makura had pretended that he is not aware of his complicity in the matter. To the best of my knowledge, Ombatse Cult was formed as a response to the constant harassment, murder and rape of Eggon tribesmen by Fulani Herdsmen, and it took the fetish potency of a Muslim medicine man, Laye Ahgu, popularly known as Baba Alakyo, for the Fulani to beat a retreat and leave the Eggon people to live in peace.

This fetish potency made the 76 year old Baba Alakyo popular that people recourse to him for spiritual healing and deliverance. The Eggon people of Nasarrawa state including Christians, Muslims, Pagans, atheists in their midst revere the medicine man as alternative protection against a failed state. Therefore, Ombatse cult is Nasarrawa people’s fetish alternative to failed justice and security. This same lack of confidence in state protection and justice led to the formation of Bakassi boys in Aba and Onitsha in 2001. The fetish Bakassi killer group used juju means to pursue , arrest and kill armed robbers and those who allegedly used witchcraft to kill others. By the time they descended on Onitsha and Aba cities of Nigeria, lots of criminals disappeared while numerous others were killed. Robbery reduced by 90 percent in the two cities until politicians hijacked and used Bakassi boys to hunt and kill opponents and dissenting views.

Politicians from the Eggon tribe have severally confirmed that Ombatse has Christians and Muslim adherents and sympathizers including Labaran Maku, present Minister of Information. Governor Al-Makura was said to have been taken to Baba Alakyo by Senator Solomon Ewuga when the former was desperate to become the Governor of the State. Al-Makura was said to have promised Baba Alakyo that he would rule for one term and make way for an Eggon man in 2015. Based on this promise, Baba Alakyo signaled his people to support Al-Makura and also fortified him with charms so that he can defeat the electoral malfeasance of the ruling PDP and the then incumbent Governor. To the surprise of electoral pundits, opposition CPC won in Nasarrawa States while they failed in their major strongholds of Kano,Kaduna, Katsina, Niger,Bauchi .
Al-Makura was said to have confided in the same Senator representing the zone, Ewuga of his intention to go for a second term, a proposition Baba Alakyo was said to have rejected.

The issue of Nigerian politicians dragging people to shrines is not new. Former Governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige was dragged to Okija Shrine to swear oath of allegiance and surrender of State funds to the family of a presidential aide under the distant approval of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. Former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State dragged the incumbent Theodore Orji and some of his aides to the same shrine to swear oath of perpetual ‘yes man’. A picture of Governor Theodore Orji wearing undies at Okija Shrine is still all over the internet. Therefore, the Nasarrawa situation, despicable as it is, is not strange in Nigeria’s brand of democracy.

There is a wide belief among Eggons that the refusal of Baba Alakyo to endorse his second term plot made Governor Al –Makura to desperately seek means of breaking the fetish oath he swore so that his tenure extension beyond 2015 can be successful. There is an allegation that there was a powerful female juju priestess from Mali (others claim the woman is from Igbirra tribe) allegedly used by the Hausa-Fulani community in Jos to neutralize the fetish potency of Berom indigenous community. Al-Makura was said to have contracted this woman to visit Alakyo and neutralize the powers of the Ombatse cult. The said woman walked naked towards the town, encountered success as earlier attempts to either apprehend or cut her with machete, knives, spears and gun failed. The Ombatse people had to send distress calls to Baba Alakyo and after using a few hour old dog for incantations, the charm of the woman was destroyed. The boys captured and severed the head of the Juju woman, amidst jubilation.

With the death of the woman, the witchcraft kingdom where she belongs allegedly wanted her head so that they could crown a successor and Al-Makura was mandated to either bring her head or that of the person that killed her to avoid repercussions. The Governor, in order to escape the wrath of another witchcraft kingdom, and to use the same occasion to destroy the powerful Ombatse cult, with the head of Baba Alakyo severed and brought to him as evidence, in the order of Biblical John the Baptist, deceived security agents to embark on a sacrificial journey. It was in the process that over one hundred personnel were killed .Baba Alakyo, giving sketchy insight into the bloody manhunt told newsmen that ''It is the governor that asked the people (thugs in police uniform) to come here and kill me, cut my head and take my head to him. When they came, because they were themselves drunk, my god did not allow them to come to me even though I was not around and they died on the way. The question I ask is; has the governor ever invited me and I refused to go? But he sent people to come and kill me and to destroy Lakyo as a whole. That is just what it is.”

Another incidence that boosted the confidence of this Ombatse Cult is the alleged congratulatory message some elders of Plateau State sent to Baba Alakyo over the successful murder of the strange juju woman. According to sources, the juju priests of Jos and surrounding villages had always referred to the activities of a strange woman as responsible for the series of defeats they suffered in the hands of Hausa-Fulani indigenes of Jos during the bloody religious riots of Obasanjo and Yaradua regimes. Some Plateau State elders are planning to understudy the secrets of the Ombatse cult with the intention of applying the formulae to Jos crisis. This disturbing plan by Plateau elders from Berom, Anaguta and Afizere tribes is as a result of mounting insecurity and inability of the state to curb the activities.

Innocent members of the State Security Services and the Nigerian Police Force were shepherded to fight a cause that is of no concern to them, a cause they were not properly briefed about. A cause they would probably have declined if the underlying truth was laid before them. This calls to question the ease with which politicians use security officials to settle political scores. If the SSS and the Police had actually taken time to ponder over the security reports, they would have discovered that the intelligence they relied upon to carry out the operation was biased and wrongly analyzed. Politicians have been known to frame people with reports in order to crucify them. It is true that Ombatse cult was forcing some people to adhere to their fetish oath, but the reason for that ill fated operation was not to stop the oath but to destroy obstacle to 2015 elections.

Governor Al-Makura should be held responsible for wasting the lives of personnel of the Nigerian Police and SSS in a vindictive attempt to obtain the head of his erstwhile medicine man. The SSS should be blamed for not acting on their good judgment by withdrawing their personnel from the attacks when they got feelers that something is fishy somewhere. The Police Commissioner should take blame for allowing self to be pressurized into deploying personnel for an operation even when reports showed that the attack is already compromised. Why he embarked on such operation few days to his retirement is a mystery. The army personnel initially billed to follow in the operation were said to have backed out when they couldn’t justify the reasons for the attack.

The Nigerian State, electoral umpires like INEC , judiciary and other organs saddled with ensuring that people’s votes count should also take blames because if the electoral processes are flawless and the courts are ready to return all stolen mandates, people like Baba Alakyo will have no political patronage and relevance. Al-Makura’s manhunt for the head of his erstwhile juju man, Baba Alakyo, led to the death of unsuspecting security men; he should stop grandstanding and apologize to a traumatized nation while laws to stop public officials from surrendering our collective mandate to fetish cults should be enacted to prevent another re-occurrence of such stigmatizing mortality.

Ombatse Series 2: Baba Alakyo, Nasarrawa People’s Fetish Alternative to Injustice and Insecurity- another Okija Shrine
~ By Obinna Akukwe

Ombatse Cult, a fetish group which draws support from majority Eggon tribe of Nassarawa State is seen as an alternative to the failed social justice and security in Nigeria. Ombatse cult came into national limelight when their followers murdered over 100 personnel of the Nigerian police and the SSS. The national uproar which followed the crisis was well intentioned- if security personnel could be slaughtered like goat, then there is no hope for the common man.

Everybody condemned the massacre and afterward a paltry N1millon naira was given to the families of slain policemen.  The case has died down, everybody has forgotten the event, till another group rises up and kills yet more number of security personnel and another round of uproar will ensue. This is Nigeria where root causes of events are swept under the carpet.

I was expecting to hear about Federal Government Commission of Inquiries on why Eggon people of  Nasarrawa see a 76 year old man, Lega Ahgu, popularly known as Baba Alakyo, from a sleepy Lakio village near Lafia,  as a saint, savior and messiah of a sort. Having interacted with many Eggon politicians, administrators and professionals over the issue of Baba Alakyo , there is unanimous affirmation that the man is innocent and those who wanted to kill him are the villains. It is painful that even clerics from the state, Christians, Muslims, Pagans and their elite including professors, PhD holders all see Baba Alakyo as a persecuted citizen whom the gods delivered from the hands of a power drunken state. How can a fetish man whose followers killed security personnel be seen as a persecuted citizen?

The answer is simple, Baba Alakyo was the first person that gave the Eggon tribe of Nasarrawa State the fetish powers they needed to reverse the series of defeats they encountered in the hands of Fulani Herdsmen. Fulani Herdsmen have terrorized the people for long, killing, maiming and raping their women. They also confiscated and destroyed their farmlands until Baba Aalkyo came to their fetish rescue. When the man took over the battle, Fulani Herdsmen were severally defeated that for them the fear of Ombatse is the beginning of wisdom. Fulani Herdsmen recently have tried to avoid Eggon people and their incessant victories over communities in Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Enugu, Delta, Kaduna and Cross River states have not been extended to the Eggon people of Nasarrawa states in recent times. Thus this old juju man helped the Eggon people obtain a sort of respite from the marauding herdsmen. What the Nigerian Police, Army, SSS etc couldn’t do for them, an old fetish master did. That is the origin of allegiance to Ombatse and Baba Alakyo's rising fetish profile.

Baba Alakyo is revered by some persons in Nasarrawa State. According to them, he doesn’t charge money for spiritual consultations and he gives herbs for medicinal purposes. He also consults spirits on behalf of persons. This fetish priest organized his people to form Ombatse, a cult whose aim is to ensure that Eggon people live in peace with each other by adhering to oaths of morality, fairness and equity especially when dealing with their fellow Egg on tribesmen.  This cult group worships a deity known as Azhili and they indoctrinate their followers that their principles tallies with the Bible and Quran, principal among which is that an Ombatse member must be holy and shun theft, adultery, false witness, intimidation etc.

Ombatse cult also metamorphosed into a spiritual court where aggrieved persons bring their cases for the spirits to adjudicate. Cases of adultery, theft, robbery, ritualism, confiscation of family properties etc which normally should have been adjudicated upon by normal administrative courts were being handled by Ombatse group because the people lacked confidence in the courts.

It seems the state apparatus hates the faces of Eggon tribesmen. Eggons in the police force are also being transferred en-masse to other states. In one of the transfer letters with Ref No CH:5250/ZN.4/VOL./194 dated 19th June, about 32 policemen from the zone were transferred out of the state in one fell swoop allegedly under pressures from the state. Governor Al-Makura had performed better than his predecessors in terms of providing infrastructures to Nasarrawa people but the culture of suffocating the Eggons did not abate under his regime.

It is obvious that the failure of security agents to provide adequate protection, the failure of the courts to dispense justice and the failure of the government to secure a better life for its citizens led the Eggon people to migrate towards a fetish medicine man as a savior. Chris Mamman, the President of Eggon Cultural Development Association (ECDA) had told newsmen severally that in recent times about 259 Eggon tribesmen had been killed and over 2500 houses burnt and the government never bothered to send in single police personnel to protect them from the regime of Abdullahi Adamu in 1999 till date. Listing litanies of unprovoked attacks Mamman said that ''On March 30, 2007, the Alago Militias attacked our peace-loving people in Assakio town in Lafia East Development Area to annihilate or cleanse the area of the Eggon people for no just cause. The Eggon lost so many lives and over 200 houses were totally razed. Despite our cry to both the state government and the law enforcement agencies, nothing was done to either compensate our people over the loss of properties or even a visit from any government official to condole with us over the loss of lives.

On Saturday, April 7, 2012, a band of Fulani militia attacked our people in Yelwa Ediya in Doma Local Government Area, killing Eggon people and burning 22 houses belonging to Eggon people.
On June 1, 2012, the Alago Militia with the support of other invited ethnic militias attacked Eggon quarters in Assakio town, killing some of our people. The reason for the attack is what they called non-payment of royalty/tribute on a bag of rice per Eggon farmer as imposed by the Alago community leader. Our people defended themselves. The rest is now history.

On October 18, 2012, a band of Fulani militia attacked our people in Angwan Alaku and Kadarko Railway Villages of Giza Development Area. This led to the death of nine Eggon people who were not only butchered but parts of their bodies were mutilated and removed and their corpses deposited in the bush close to their farms''.

Okija Shrine was one of such sister cult in Anambra State where people took various cases to for strange spirits to judge. Those whose properties and family land were confiscated, apprentice salesmen whose masters refused to settle, cases of robbery, mysterious death, theft, scandals and malicious defamation of character all took their cases to Okija Shrine. The Shrine attendants then sends emissaries to invite the accused to the place within 7-21 days to clear self of all accusations or the spirits will declare them guilty and mete justice. Such was the powers of this fetish Shrine that those allegedly killed by it are taken to the place and deposited to avoid spiraling death for others.

Politicians also used the shrine to administer oaths of secrecy and allegiance from followers. Senator Andy Uba allegedly ordered his brother Chris Uba to drag ex-Governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige to the shrine to swear oath of surrendering state coffers to their family, and it took the resistance of the combined voice of Anambra people and some anointing oil  Ngige obtained from an Anglican Bishop, before he wriggled out of the fetish oath. Former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State dragged his successor to the place to swear oath of subservience.

Therefore, it is shameful that a society that has up to 20 million literates and about 5 million graduates from various universities in the world cannot put forward an effective social security, justice administration and policing system.  It is disturbing that a nation like Nigeria is gradually retrogressing towards allegiance to fetish organizations in search of justice and protection. Even if more policemen were killed by Ombatse cultists, it will not change the minds of Eggon people, because they believe that during their hard times, the apparatus of the law offered no defense.

Days after the Ombatse attacks, some herdsmen attacked villages in Abutu, Guma and Gwer local governments of Benue State leaving over 40 persons dead. A month later, the herdsmen attacked Nzorov ward in the same Guma Local Government where the earlier attacks took place, killing over 45 persons again and the security agents seems helpless. Thus over 85 persons dead within weeks and the state offered no security. Soon these Benue communities will gravitate towards a sinister juju man for deliverance and the fetish self help cycle goes on. These strange spirits Nigerians are gravitating towards for communal deliverance will soon make strange demands on these wards because their protection is not for nothing. All the family and town prayer deliverances all over the place is because some forefathers mortgaged themselves to strange spirits in order to obtain reprieve from attacks, oppressions and injustice.

Nigerians travel to Ijebu- Ode, Calabar, Kano, Asaba, Warri, Bauchi, Benin and different places searching for groups and cults like Okija, Ombatse etc in an effort to obtain justice, protection and security. As a result, more educated persons including those trained in the US are paying loyalty to suspicious spirits for protection and preservation. This does not make for a good social and spiritual development .Churches and Mosques looks  silly in the face of all these, while faith in God is being substituted for faith in juju priests. The earlier the Nigerian government and religious leaders develops a system of effective policing, security, justice and conflict resolution based on equity and the rule of law, the better for the nation. Deliberate confiscation of electoral mandates through corrupt connivance of the executive, judiciary and security agents are giving rise to such fetish allegiance, especially for people whose faith in God had suffered fatality.

Any Nigerian who thwarts justice, delays justice, oppresses his neighbor and embezzles funds meant for the welfare of the citizenry have indirectly contributed in driving people with little faith in God to hold allegiance to fetish groups like Ombatse , Okija, Egbesu , Civilian JTF as alternative to justice and security and soon God’s judgments will fall on them.

Aviation Week Releases Top-Performing Airline Rankings

Allegiant Air Ranks #1 Overall

NEW YORK, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviation Week has announced the results of its annual Top-Performing Airlines (TPA) study, featuring ranking lists that are the most comprehensive guide to the relative strength of the world's airlines.

This year's overall top performer is Allegiant Air, which also wins the small carrier division. Ryanair is the best of the large carriers, and Copa Airlines is the top mid-size company. Others to excel are All Nippon Airways, which is the best large airline that is not a low-cost carrier, and Australia's Regional Express, which scores second overall despite having the smallest revenues in the study.

The annual TPA study is based primarily on financial data from the last full calendar year. Carriers are scored in six categories – such as financial health, capital efficiency and business model performance – and then ranked by total score. Only publicly traded airlines are included.

Overall, the study presents a picture of an airline industry gradually becoming healthier, with better fiscal management throughout the sector. Of the 71 airlines tracked in the TPA study, 35 improved their total score through the end of 2012. This is much better than in the previous TPA study, when only 15 carriers improved their scores.

The results are featured in the July 1, 2013 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology, with deeper data, analysis and expanded rankings tables available to AWIN (Aviation Week Intelligence Network) subscribers. Links to the basic rankings can also be found on our Things With Wings blog:  http://www.aviationweek.com/Blogs.aspx?plckBlogId=Blog:7a78f54e-b3dd-4fa6-ae6e-dff2ffd7bdbb&plckPostId=Blog:7a78f54e-b3dd-4fa6-ae6e-dff2ffd7bdbbPost:e8e9c929-ef76-46b9-9120-0cbec9dc8dc1
"Our airline rankings are not based on arbitrary selections or surveys, but on carefully constructed formulas with a wide range of data inputs," says Aviation Week Air Transport Editor Adrian Schofield. "The TPA study and rankings are unique, in that they compare airlines from all global regions in a truly objective manner."

Aviation Week's Top-Performing Airlines study provides a precise measure of airline strengths, weaknesses, and financial viability. It is reviewed by an advisory panel of prominent airline analysts, who also provide insights into the broader trends revealed by the study. They discuss how the data and rankings indicate which carriers are flourishing and those that are still vulnerable based on business models and geographic regions.
Airlines are ranked in three size groups, as well as overall. Despite a marked improvement among the large carriers, it's still the smaller niche airlines – such as Allegiant, Regional Express and AirAsia – that are the star performers. Four of the top six airlines overall are from the small category, and eight of the top 15.

Top 10 airline scores (all size categories)
  1. Allegiant Travel Co.                    (U.S.)
  2. Regional Express Holdings         (Australia)
  3. AirAsia                                     (Malaysia)
  4. Copa Holdings                           (Panama)
  5. WestJet Airlines                        (Canada)
  6. Spirit Airlines                            (U.S.)
  7. Ryanair Holdings                       (Ireland)
  8. EasyJet                                    (U.K.)
  9. All Nippon Airways                    (Japan)
  10. Alaska Air Group                       (U.S.)

CHIME FOR CHANGE Storytelling Platform Releases Powerful Stories Of Courageous Girls And Women Around The World

Mariane Pearl leads a dedicated team of journalists committed to bringing untold stories about girls and women to the world's attention

Powerful short films by acclaimed directors, and curated by Executive Producer Salma Hayek Pinault, highlight issues affecting girls and women around the world

LONDON, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- CHIME FOR CHANGE, the global campaign for girls' and women's empowerment founded by Gucci, has today announced the launch of its storytelling platform, designed to shine a light on stories celebrating and spotlighting courageous girls and women around the world. Through a combination of short films and journalistic content, the powerful stories are centered on the individuals who live them, and aim to inspire conversation and community participation by raising awareness among a global audience.

To mark the launch of the storytelling platform, CHIME FOR CHANGE, led by a founding committee comprised of Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini, Salma Hayek Pinault and Beyonce Knowles-Carter, has released five original short films, told through the lens of creative filmmakers who have been inspired to share previously untold compelling stories with the world. The films first premiered earlier this month during THE SOUND OF CHANGE LIVE concert event on June 1, which gathered together some of the world's most talented artists and renowned activists to raise funds and awareness for girls' and women's empowerment. The films are available to view and download through the CHIME FOR CHANGE homepage www.chimeforchange.org and www.youtube.com/chimeforchange

"We will shine a spotlight on those who are fighting for education, health and justice for girls and women by sharing stories about real people who are speaking out and rising up to change the course of history," said Salma Hayek Pinault, Executive Producer of the CHIME FOR CHANGE film unit.  "These films tell intimate, personal stories – but these stories represent universal themes.  And now we can all play a part by turning inspiration into action."

In addition, Mariane Pearl, Managing Editor of CHIME FOR CHANGE, has assembled a team of international journalists who will document the pivotal time in history we are currently experiencing as girls and women courageously stand up to demand that their voices and stories are heard. Ms. Pearl will work with independent journalists from all over the world and with the support of content partners including the International Herald Tribune and the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Ms. Pearl said: "Journalism is about holding those in power accountable and giving a voice to the voiceless. We will do both, denouncing the violence and discrimination women are facing because of their gender and giving a voice to those who may have never spoken out until now."

Ms. Pearl added: "One by one these individuals' stories demonstrate that women everywhere are ready to stand up for themselves and for one another, ready to live to their full potential."
The journalism platform will serve as an inspiration for women and girls everywhere to connect and learn each others' stories, using the power of narrative and storytelling to create a global network, and support those working individually to transform their environments.

The five short films released this week illustrate some of the many critical issues faced by girls and women around the world, and focus on real life stories connected to the three pillars of CHIME FOR CHANGE: Education, Health and Justice.  The films include:
  • SEPIDEH: LETTERS TO EINSTEIN directed by Berit Madsen, the story of Sepideh, a young Iranian astronomer who dreams of becoming an astronaut.  The film tells the story of a young woman who dares to pursue her dream despite the many societal pressures and familial obligations that threaten to block her path.
  • REACHING FOR THE SUN by Jehane Noujaim, which follows the journey of 30 grandmothers chosen from remote corners of the globe who are trained as solar engineers, enabling them to return home and solar power their own villages.
  • Dan Reed's#SHOUTINGBACK, which tells the story of Laura Bates, a UK journalist and activist who uses social media to highlight the issue of sexual harassment and objectification of women.
  • DYNAMIQUE DES FEMMES JURISTES by Hi-Sim Studios, an animated film about a group of female lawyers in eastern Congo fighting for women's rights.
  • JESSICA'S STORY by Libby Spears profiles Jessica as she shares her story of being sex trafficked as a child. Artist Lydiaemily Archibald paints a large mural in Los Angeles's infamous Skid Row to capture Jessica's spirit and resilience.
In addition, a special version of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy'sHUMAIRA: THE DREAM CATCHER with a voiceover from Madonna has been released this week by CHIME FOR CHANGE.  All of the new films on the storytelling platform join the extended trailer of THE SUPREME PRICE by Joanna Lipper, the first short film to be released by CHIME FOR CHANGE to coincide with the launch of the campaign in February.

The launch of the CHIME FOR CHANGE storytelling platform follows The SOUND OF CHANGE LIVE held at Twickenham Stadium on 1st June. The concert event was headlined by CHIME FOR CHANGE co-founder Beyonce, along with an incredible line-up of all-star performers and presenters who brought girls' and women's empowerment to the world's stage.

Immediately prior to THE SOUND OF CHANGE LIVE concert event, Ms. Pearl hosted a five-day 'Reporting Women' journalism summit, in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The course explored topics ranging from the safety of female journalists, to female stereotypes and narratives in the media. Participating journalists were recruited from all parts of the world, and will have their work featured as a part of the storytelling platform on the CHIME FOR CHANGE website.

The funds raised through the CHIME FOR CHANGE campaign will be donated to projects presented by more than 80 non-profit organizations in over 70 countries through CHIME FOR CHANGE partner Catapult, the first crowdfunding platform solely dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women.
Many of the CHIME FOR CHANGE short films are represented by an associated project on Catapult, so that viewers can become personally engaged in the individual stories of the girls and women in the films.  These include: helping Humaira Bachal build her Dream Model Street School on the outskirts of Karachi; supporting Laura Bates's Everyday Sexism project; helping survivors of human trafficking, with stories like Jessica's, through organizations such as the Nest Foundation; and training the next generation of women leaders through the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) in Nigeria as illustrated through Hafsat Abiola's story in THE SUPREME PRICE.

Consumer Reports' Survey: Nine Of 10 Americans Who Haggled Saved Money

Consumer Reports' Survey: Nine Of 10 Americans Who Haggled Saved Money But, more than one-third of Americans refused to bargain for better deals on products and services; Plus, six savvy haggling tips

YONKERS, N.Y., July 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Consumers who don't haggle are leaving money on the table.  A new nationally representative survey of 2,000 Americans by Consumer Reports found that just 48 percent of shoppers tried bargaining for a better deal on everyday goods and services during the past three years, down from 61 percent in 2007.  And most of those who bothered to negotiate received a discount at least once during that period.

The full report on haggling is available in the August 2013 issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReports.org.

"Don't expect your doctor, bank, or local appliance store to cut you a break simply because you have a nice face and smile.  It takes moxie and self-confidence," said Tod Marks, senior projects editor at Consumer Reports. "Having the guts to ask for a discount can result in hundreds of dollars in savings."
When it comes to haggling, nothing is off limits.  But those who don't take the risk, lose.  In Consumer Reports' survey, 35 percent of respondents said they won't bargain, period.  Men are more likely to haggle than women – 20 percent of women said that it makes them uncomfortable. But both genders were equally successful when they tried. Younger consumers, those 18 to 29, tend to enjoy the practice more than those over 60, who were particularly turned off by it.

Shoppers achieved the highest success haggling over the price of collectibles or antiques, furniture, and appliances according to Consumer Reports' survey.  Schmoozing with a salesperson was the favorite tactic for haggling over collectibles and antiques, where those who negotiated saved $100 on average.  Those who haggled over furniture and questioned a health-related charge saved an average of $300; those who bargained on washers, dryers, refrigerators, and the like, saved $200, on average.
Consumer Reports also found that those who were successful at challenging the cost of a cell-phone plan averaged savings of $80.

Six Haggling Do's
Savvy negotiators know that politeness, friendliness, and a smile are harder to resist than tough talk.  Consumer Reports has compiled the following tips to get to yes:
  1. Give sellers a reason to negotiate.  Loyal  customers  should  remind  their  merchant  or service provider of their repeated business.  Offering discounts on products or services is a small price to pay to keep customers coming back.
  2.  Ask open-ended questions.  Retailers are more likely to turn down a customer who asks questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no.  Instead of asking for a specific dollar-amount or percentage off an item, ask what they are willing to offer as a discount.
  3.  Decide on a fair price.  Research the cost of any product before buying.  Print out or take screen shots of website pages or written quotes from competitors.  Fifty-seven percent of survey respondents told the salesperson they'd check competitors' prices.  Call the store to confirm that it will match a lower price.  Ask about a refund of the difference if there's a price-drop within a reasonable period of time.  If a discount on the item is out of the question, ask for free shipping, delivery, or installation.
  4. Seek a discount for cash.  Offering to pay with paper instead of plastic eliminates transaction fees sellers are required to pay to credit-card companies.
  5. Find flaws.  Retailers are likely to offer discounts on products with cosmetic blemishes or slight defects such as clothing with snags, smudges or stains, and appliances or electronics with dings or scratches.  It's generally easier to negotiate such deals with independent stores than with chains and for private-label products than for big brands because sellers can't return flawed products to their makers for credit.
  6. Be willing to walk away.  It's expensive for stores to attract new customers, so they're often willing to work hard to retain their existing ones.  But consumers who don't think they're getting a good deal should go elsewhere and try to negotiate a better bargain.

Every Local Council in Nigeria Should Have A Cinema - Ladi Ladebo

$

Every local council should be encouraged to construct a village/town/city center which should include at least a cinema hall depending on the size of the village and or town and city. Every local government chairman is busy building markets stalls as a revenue generating project for the council. Fine! There is also money to be made from properties that can be hired out to citizens for weddings, funerals, and other celebrations with a modern approach. Such can be achieved within a short period. That will give us some seven hundred and seventy potential outlets for films, well spread out to be accessible to all Nigerian citizens

Peace With The Beast? Say Mun Kawo Karshensu

Peace With The Beast? Say Mun Kawo Karshensu

Lawrence Anini was a bandit who terrorized Benin City in the 80s along with his second in command, Monday Osunbor. His band of terrorists began robbing busses, banks and stealing cars. Anini gradually expanded the activities of his syndicate to cities and states around Benin. On December 3rd, 1986, Anini was captured at a house, while in the company of a girl friend. He was shot in the leg and transferred to a military hospital where the leg was amputated. Ibrahim Babangida, the president at the time had Anini tried expediently and as is the custom and law in Nigeria, he was killed by firing squad on March 29th, 1987. And that was the end of Lawrence Anini, Nigeria’s terror bandit, who left trails of death and sorrow in his path.

We could go on to review the story of Mohammed Marwa, aka, Maitatsine, a radical northern bandit, and how a successful military campaign succeeded in defeating and killing him in 1980. These are all stories of terrorism in Nigeria’s history that most of us are familiar with.

Today, the story of insane terrorism and evil is the Boko Haram, aka “western civilization is bad,” terrorist saga centered in Nigeria’s north east. Boko Haram terrorism, headed by a man who goes under the nickname, Abubakar Shekau, allegedly from Niger republic, has taken the lives of over 6000 innocent Nigerians, Muslims, Christians, Hausa, Kanuri, Yoruba, Igbo, old and young alike. The terrorists have never submitted to reason, never proposed a sensible agenda and have never abated in their campaigns of merciless murder. Well, up until June 26th.

On June 26th, a press release that appeared to come from Boko Haram top quarters, for the first time, asked for a cease fire with the Nigerian government. Ordinarily, this would read reasonable. But this is no ordinary situation. What prompted this demand for a ceasefire? We have to go back to May 14th. The current administration, headed by president Goodluck Jonathan, on May 14th, in response to a dangerous reality, that the northern extremist terrorists who had largely been left unchecked though years of rampage, had acquired so much arms, training, vehicles and guts, that they were attacking military barracks in Borno state and according to Nigeria’s PDP chairman, Bamanga Tukur, were even about to declare their first Nigerian state.

In addition to the declaration of a state of emergency, a full military deployment was rapidly made and war was declared against this malicious, terrorist insurgency. The president of Nigeria has conceded that he might be one of the most disliked leaders in the world. But with the engagement of Boko Haram in this total war, for once, many Nigerians said he had done something very right.

By June, Nigeria had turned over the tables on Boko Haram. And when we say Nigeria, we mean not only the brave men of the Nigerian army, but the brave men, women and youth of the federation. Nigeria’s civilians decided that it was time for them to decide and take control of their destiny. Against their safety, the youth of the North took up arms. Not the ammunition type, but sticks, cutlasses, catapults and the like. Now popularly known as the “civilian JTF,” youths set up more check-points in Borno and Yobe state, civilian check-points than the military had setup. Nigeria’s civilians joined the war in full force, routing out Boko Haram terrorists, exposing them. They even went as far as declaring government officials who they knew were linked to the terrorism, and going after these.

Northern parents were not left out. Many revealed and exposed their sons, wives, husbands, as the case may be. The people said, no. No, to terror. No, to banditry. No to Boko Haram, miscreants, murderers and robbers, destroying their native land.

Victory

Such communal effort and bravery can only result in one thing, victory. Boko Haram has since been severely decimated. The bandits have run into the mountains, only daring to come down to scavenge for food.  The terrorists have gotten so desperate, they have gone totally insane. They now attack school children, seeing them as the great enemy. Nigerians thanked their Lord and celebrated the victory over terror. We knew Boko Haram can never return, because terror can only exist where the people do nothing. The northern youth have woken up and will never, ever do nothing again. Everyone was doing something, policing their neighborhood. There will forever be no more room for Boko Haram terror. Perhapos even, Boko Haram had thought us something more—cooperation, love and peaceful coexistence.

And then the president slapped our faces

On July 8th, the unbelievable happened. The Jonathan administration announced that they had agreed to a ceasefire with the beast. Cease fire with terrorists. The news sounded impossible to believe. Who were they ceasing fire with? But Boko Haram is being defeated. Why will the victor sign a ceasefire with the vanquished? What can this mean? Who is the government struggling to protect? Is the government trying to allow this wicked formation a chance to remain relevant, to regroup and to continue to be a potential terror threat to the good people of Nigeria?

As the civilian JTF began going for top level sponsors of Boko Haram, more names of possible senior official, government friends and current and ex-government officials have been thrown about in the streets and in the press. Elite have been getting scared. An ex governor pleaded with the current governor of Borno to halt his trip to China and quickly return to facilitate the release of a party chairman, currently arrested by the military JTF in concert with the civilian JTF on suspicion of Boko Haram sponsorship. Other top level sponsors were obviously getting uncomfortably warm, feeling the heat at their toes. It is only reasonable to suspect that these elite impressed it on the president to “cease fire,” so they can stay out of the fire.

In a news report last week, a former Nigerian president at a meeting of Nigerian presidents, said, “the security situation should be dealt with in house.” Whatever did this mean? But the question is, what do we the people say and what do we want?

If I may submit, on behalf of the brave civilian JTF of North Nigeria, whose shoe-laces, I am not fit to fasten. We the people reject any form of cease fire with the beast. We the people will never stop, we will never renege. We will never abate until all terrorists have been meted the judgment they deserve. We will never live with murderers. We will never forgive the sponsors of the murderers. For the sake of those who have died, for the sake of those who are injured, for those who have lost loved ones, for those who suffer, due to the hunger and poverty this insane terrorism has caused. For the sake of the brave military men, who have died saving Nigeria, not from external war as they signed up with the army to engage in, but rather in internal senseless terrorism. For the families of the soldiers. The only peace will be when Boko Haram have met their peace. We implore the government stay with us on the right side of history.

We the civilian JTF, say: Say Mun Kawo Karshensu — Not till we bring their end!

Stand With Malala

Hi there,

Do you remember Malala Yousafzai? She's the 15-year-old that the Pakistani Taliban tried to assassinate last October because of her strong voice in the fight for women’s rights and youth education.

The Taliban gunmen shot her in front of her peers -- but she survived and she hasn’t stopped fighting. On July 12, she'll mark her 16th birthday by speaking at the UN. She’ll be delivering the first-ever set of education policy recommendations written for youth, by youth.

I just signed this letter to the UN Secretary-General telling him, and the world, that Malala does not stand alone in her fight for universal youth education.

Will you sign it as well?

Thank you for supporting this cause with me.

Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans) delegation to implore the US government designate Boko Haram a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). All he got out of that effort was a cute picture he has hung up on his office wall, of a hand-shake with a US respected senator. To all those baffled as to why the US refuses to designate Boko Haram, the second most notorious global terrorist organization, as a FTO. The answer is rather simple. It lies within this quote from the president of Nigeria, on the sponsors and members of Boko Haram:
"Some of them are in the executive arm of government, some of them are in the parliamentary/legislative arm of government, while some of them are even in the judiciary, some are also in the armed forces, the police and other security agencies. Some continue to dip their hands and eat with you and you won't even know the person who will point a gun at you or plant a bomb behind your house."

Simply put- the United States does not meddle in internal political affairs of nations, no matter how bloody their consequences are. Well, let's say, in principle they don't—because when it comes to morals, Russia and even China appear to uphold more dignifying standards than the US these days; but that's a whole different story. The US will never list a group, headed by known members of Nigerian government and governing elite, as a terrorist group, most especially when the Nigerian government itself refuses to treat the masterminds and members as such. The president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has on more than one occasion, admitted that he knows the sponsors of Boko Haram. That these are people he rules and dines with. With such admission, if the US listed the entire group as a terrorist group, this will automatically implicate all who know the members and conceal them, as well as all those who associate with the members and sponsors of this FTO, which will automatically include the Nigerian president. This explains partly, the US' hesitation. The minute Nigeria is serious about eliminating Boko Haram, after qualifying it, its members and sponsors, as killers and enemies of the state, the US and indeed many more nations will throw in full support, and the death-loving Boko Haram will be a thing remembered.

The above stated, can be easily proven by analyzing the events of the last two months. In early May, Boko Haram was at the top of its game. Raiding barracks’ and decimating towns. The sect ruled more than half of Borno state. There was no reverberating global reaction to the culmination of the reign of massacres and terror. There was predictably no Nigerian response, either. Just like when Nigeria experienced some of the worst floods since the time of Noah, there was little to no international media or government assistance or mere notice of Nigeria’s predicament. Why waste air time and money on that hopelessly corrupt, suicidal nation of killers and thieves, I bet the world said.
In Mid May the president was pressed to cut short a visit to South Africa, as global media, and the likes of Wole Soyinka, reacting to the deaths and unchecked terror campaign of Boko Haram, raised flags that Nigeria was at war and the president was doing nothing. The president convened an urgent meeting of top army officials, and declared a state of emergency and war against Boko Haram.

Facts: Within weeks of Nigeria showing seriousness in dealing with this threat, the following occurred:

1. UN: On May 17, 2013, the UN rights office declared that Nigerian rebels could face war crimes charges for ‘population cleansing’

2. US: On June 3rd, the US declared group tactical and PR leader, Abubakar Shekau wanted, and placed a $7 million bounty on his head.

3. UK: By July 8th, the British government declared support and membership of Boko Haram and Ansar as criminal. This declaration automatically froze all UK assets and UK related financial support to Boko Haram members and sponsors.

These significant achievements did not go without the clear demonstration of Nigeria's seriousness in waging its war to crush Boko Haram, as well as follow up government and citizen actions, including Nigeria's government on June 4th, proscribing Boko Haram--group, membership and support--under the Terrorism Prevention Act, and also the media publicity of the efforts of Nigeria people, the ‘Civilian JTF,’ who, now supported at last by their government, demonstrated the resolve and brave commitment of the ordinary people to tackle Boko Haram, with stop-and-search security stops and other para-military investigations and civilian anti-terrorism engagements.

It all looked good. At last, CANAN could bet the US would soon proscribe Boko Haram; people in Nigeria were confident that the mountain residing, hungry terrorists on the run would soon be significantly incapacitated. The youth of Nigeria's north east, with these words, "Sai Mun Kawo Karshensu," “until we bring their end,” had resolved to not stop, till Boko Haram was totally eliminated.

A little over a month after Nigeria took serious, the extremist threat that had claimed over 2000 lives of innocent Nigerians of all creeds, apparently, as only one media suspiciously published, Boko Haram pleaded for mercy, and the Nigerian government and head of national security, quickly and eagerly agreed to a ceasefire with the cult-on-the-run. This was announced suddenly, to the bewilderment of all, on July 8th. It was so tightly and perfectly packaged, it seemed like an inside-administration deal. The civilian JTF and military who are at the forefront of the battle, were apparently not even consulted in this top level decision.

Nigeria's Special Duties Minister and chairman of Nigeria's dead-on-arrival Boko Haram amnesty committee, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, next announced something very surprising. That Abubakar Shekau was signatory to the worked out ceasefire between the federal republic of Nigeria and the terrorists.

What Does a Ceasefire Mean?
Here is where it gets confusing. Abubakar Shekau is declared wanted, not only by the government of the United States, but also by the Nigerian government and the organization that first declared him wanted, Muslims Against Terror. Now he is negotiating a ceasefire with Nigeria, according to Turaki. Does this ceasefire include his turning himself in? Does this ceasefire not promise him that the Nigerian amnesty committee will now shield him and his other generals from Nigerian law, from the US' 'wanted' declaration and from the stipulations of the ‘proscription,’ of Boko Haram, declared June 4th? Additionally, will he and his generals, under this amnesty, now be protected from the UK ban on Boko Haram? This line of thought extends indefinitely. It is no surprise the military reacted to the ‘ceasefire’ news in disbelief and shock.

I am no expert in these things, but apart from this ceasefire being a precondition for turning themselves in to the security services, I am unable to understand how it is possible for a Nation to negotiate a ceasefire with a wanted, proscribed, murderous gang of urban bandits. Surrender can be agreed upon, but a ceasefire? And what next for the US, UK and UN who believed Nigeria was serious about tackling the terrorists? Sadly, Nigeria’s leadership and much of the elite, do not realize (or simply do not care) that there can never be sustained peace without first establishing real justice.

So let us step back and appreciate a summary of what just happened. A group of Nigerians decided to take the law into their own hands. They terrorized Nigeria without relent or remorse. Nigeria literally did nothing. Its elite were interestingly very safe from the terrorists. Later Nigeria begged them to accept placation in the form of an amnesty. The group snuffed at the plea. Finally, under immense pressure, Nigeria fought back. Just over a month after fighting back, the murderous group agreed for and was offered peace and compensation (amnesty).
It has happened before. A similar group, MEND, the Niger Delta militant group, reigned havoc on Nigeria. In economic warfare which affected the lives of Nigerians near and far, due to crushing economic hardship secondary to oil industry vandalization and reduced oil output, the group got Nigeria to its knees in suffering. Nigeria negotiated a ceasefire with the group, and gave amnesty settlement for the Niger Delta militants and all who signed up as jobless youth with a claimed history of terrorism. Today, leaders of that militant organization, the likes of Asari Dokubo and Tompolo, who have blood of thousands of Nigerians on their hands, live free in Abuja and continue to terrorize the nation from their mansions. These ex-murderers are even part of the government, and have been given military-nature billion dollar contracts to secure the regions they terrorize.

There is no doubt that certain northerners saw this event as one they too could copy. These northern elite think Boko can be controlled; they still do not realize that sure as the sun rises, the evil monster if left to grow will someday kill them. As long as their family was safe from the terror of Boko Haram, they supported this group to unleash terror as a means of either gaining political power, or creating a situation where an amnesty is worked for, not the good people of Nigeria, but those who sign-up as terrorists, and to line their(elites) pockets. These elite pressed it upon Nigerian government to remove force and give so-called amnesty to these killers.

There is much hardship in Nigeria. Millions live below the poverty line. Nigeria, a nation blessed with abundant resources in addition to top level oil reserves, has some of the world’s richest and poorest people. Dangote, world number 46, and people who have no shoes; really, no shoes, are what make up Nigeria. Nigeria's masses live on less than $1/day, while the president and oil minister take home, apart from their salaries—the highest in the world— $500,000 per PFI kickback for over 50 PFI's per month. The leadership and elite friends who make and benefit from the leadership are so engrossed in dividing and consuming Nigeria's wealth and planning their next political maneuvers, that they have left a population, more than ripe to revolt, or perhaps, not so...

Distract, Divide and Devour
With the socio-economic gap, any anthropologist would predict the normal cycle of nature, that the men without shoes will rise up against the men who believe that ‘terrorism is a smaller problem than the failing infrastructure.’ Anthropological study predicts that the stronger of the oppressed, the teaming youth, will lead a rebellion against the few elite who distract, divide and devour the nation. People keep asking, where and when will Nigeria's revolution be?
Let's attempt to answer that too. Sadly, we are about to crash your hopes, if you wanted a revolution. Nigeria's revolution already happened, it was just not televised. And that's not the people's revolution of August 1993 that got rid of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, in the oft forgotten pre-Arab spring, Nigerian spring. No, not that. The nation had a silent revolution, in medicine, you’ll say, "silent infarct," for that heart attack that came without much noticeable pain.

What happened in the south, the Niger Delta MEND crises, was a first half of the revolution. The result was some bribe for the top ‘revolutionary’ Nigerians, some reward for the ‘tougher’ Nigerians who would not accept the oppression and corruption, and voila. Revolution controlled in the oil spill Niger Delta. And don’t be fooled the oil spills now more than ever.

In the harsh land-locked north, many of the jobless revolutionary Nigerians were similarly pulled into terrorism, and against reason, the government insists on not treating them like criminals, but forgiving them and putting them under their control, so, voila, revolution not only carefully controlled but Nigeria promises to again reward and recruit the worst and most rebellious of us, to control the rest.

Anywhere else the criminally tended of the revolutionary elements from among Nigeria's youth decide to take up arms, the Nigerian government, who love to reward corruption and murder, but dislike virtue, decency and positive action, will be happy to control the revolution, and grant an ‘amnesty’ and reward for the murderers, who will subsequently be hired to control the rest decent masses.

The bad youth revolted and line their pockets, and the rest…are engrossed reading and writing articles?
In conclusion, the most hardship challenged extremes of Nigeria have revolted. The Dokubo’s and Tompolo’s usurped the environmental dilapidation southern revolution, Shekau burned up the poor-north revolution. The Igbo marginalization…we know that history. And for many of us, the revolution has been against each other.

So are we waiting for, and asking why the world, both east and west will not join us battle and proscribe our terrorist groups? And are we still waiting for our revolutions? Wait no longer. Nigeria is a nation of terrorists, authority-pen and gun killers, and whoever fights terrorists, fights us (our leadership, elite, government, communal and revolutionary). The revolutionaries have been rewarded with the bounties of the battle. The revolution happened already, it just was not televised.

Women's Rights in Africa: 18 countries are yet to ratify the Maputo Protocol!

PARIS, 10 July 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol), the Coalition of the campaign, Africa for Womens' Rights : Ratify and Respect reiterates its call for the continental ratification of this progressive instrument within the African human rights system and for its effective implementation.

Adopted on July 11, 2013, to complement and strengthen the articles of the African Charter related to the protection and promotion of women's rights, the Maputo Protocol is an important instrument of reference. Its provisions, with regard to civil and political rights, physical and psychological integrity, sexual and reproductive health, non-discrimination, economic emancipation, among others, symbolise African States' commitments to put an end to discrimination, violence and gender stereotypes against women.

« The adoption of the Maputo Protocol was an exceptional moment, historical for the realisation of the rights of women in Africa. Today, this instrument constitutes a model, a endless source of inspiration. Provided its ratification and full implementation, it can represent a real tool of action for the lasting transformation of our societies » declared Soyata Maiga, Special Rapporteur of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) on the rights of women in Africa.

36 out of 54 member States of the African Union (AU) have so far ratified the Protocol, a clear victory for those who over the years have tirelessly mobilised and worked to achieve this goal. Moreover, in many countries, legal and institutional measures, such as laws prosecuting perpetrators of sexual violence (Kenya, Liberia), criminalising domestic violence (Ghana, Mozambique), prohibiting female genital mutilation (Uganda, Zimbabwe) or establishing mechanisms mandated to promote women's rights (Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal), have accompanied these ratifications.

Despite these notable achievements, there are still some obstacles to the full realisation of women's rights on the continent. Eighteen (18) states (Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Niger, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sao Tome & Principe, Sudan, South Sudan, Tunisia), have still not ratified the Protocol, and in several of these countries – including Sudan, Central African Republic or Egypt, which still facing serious political crisis or situations of armed conflicts – women continue to be the main targets of violence, discrimination and stigmatisation.

For Sheila Nabachwa, FIDH Vice President and Ag. Deputy Executive Director (Programs) at the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI – Uganda), « Non-State Parties should understand that, today, the trend goes on the other side. 10 years after its adoption, it is time for these States to ratify the Protocol and accept that the guarantee and protection of women's fundamental rights can no longer suffer from political, cultural or religious considerations or pretexts ».

In State Parties, several of the rights enshrined in the Protocol, or provided within national laws, are yet to be fully implemented. In DRC, Guinea-Conakry, Mali, thousands of women victims of sexual violence continue to demand justice and compensation; in Uganda, they are still waiting for equality within the family to be recognized ; in Nigeria, they continue to fight for their right to property to become a reality. Unfortunately, most of the State Parties do not respect their obligation, under article 26 of the Protocol, to indicate, in their periodic reports submitted to the ACHPR, the measures undertaken for the full realisation of women's rights as provided within the Maputo Protocol.

«The adoption of the Maputo Protocol by African States represented a formidable progress from a legal point of view ; its effective implementation should now symbolise the respect of the obligations they have freely consented to abide by » declared Mabassa Fall, FIDH Representative to the African Union.
On this tenth anniversary of the Maputo Protocol, the Coalition of the Campaign Africa for Women's Rights: Ratify and Respect pays tribute to the determination and courage of the women and men who advocate tirelessly to ensure that the rights guaranteed in the Maputo Protocol are not lost. In this regard, our Coalition notes with concerns the repeated attacks in several countries against women activists, a phenomenon that must be taken seriously and to which States must respond without delay. The Coalition of the Campaign calls on all national, regional and international actors to join the considerable efforts that are made on a daily basis for the ratification and enforcement of the Maputo Protocol.
