American Capital Energy & Infrastructure Commits $130 Million to Nigerian Power Sector

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- American Capital Energy & Infrastructure ("ACEI") announced today that it has committed to invest up to $130 million in Azura Power Holdings Ltd. ("Azura"), the company responsible for developing the Azura-Edo power project in Edo State, Nigeria. With a goal of becoming the leading power development company in West Africa, Azura will utilize ACEI's investment to fund the first and second phases of the Azura-Edo power project, pursue its greenfield development pipeline and future acquisitions, expand its team, and grow its construction and operational capabilities.

The Azura-Edo power project is a proposed 450MW open cycle gas turbine power station being developed near Benin City in Edo State and represents the first phase of a 1,000MW power plant facility. Azura and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc signed a groundbreaking power purchase agreement on April 22, 2013, which is being used as a template for other project-financed independent power producers in the country. The transaction was showcased by President Goodluck Jonathan as critical to the Nigerian power sector reform process. The first phase of the plant, which is targeted to reach financial close in early 2014 and come on stream in 2016/2017, is forecast to create over 1,000 direct jobs during its construction and operation. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the industrial and social wellbeing of the area, leading to further economic development and job creation.

Mr. Paul Hanrahan, CEO and co-founder of ACEI, said: "We are extremely pleased to announce our investment in Azura, a good example of the type of investment in high growth platforms in the energy infrastructure space that we are targeting. Our investment is in recognition of the significant progress made by the Azura co-founders on the first phase of the Azura-Edo power project, the growth opportunities in the Nigerian and West African markets, and our confidence in the Federal Government of Nigeria's power sector reform program."

In June 2013, ACEI joined Power Africa, a United States Government initiative launched by President Obama that is focused on supporting economic growth and development in Africa by increasing clean and reliable access to electrical power. The United States Government along with the governments of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania, and private sector partners have coordinated to accelerate and spur investments in the continent. As a partner in the presidential initiative, ACEI is actively pursuing investments in African power companies to originate, develop, finance and operate regional energy infrastructure assets in West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa, which, over the next four years, could reach $800 million in total investment.

"In line with our Power Africa efforts, ACEI is investing in the leading independent power producer platform in this key African market," said Lisa Pinsley, ACEI Director of Africa Investments. "Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with one of the highest growth rates in the world. With a current population of over 170 million, the seventh largest in the world, Nigeria's expanding economy suffers from a lack of power infrastructure. The United Nations estimates that Nigeria's population will reach 230 million within the next 20 years, and the total grid-based power generation capacity must rise tenfold to 40,000MW to meet the demand. Azura is, and will continue to be, a key driver in this growth in capacity."

Mr. Sundeep Bahanda, co-founder of Amaya Capital Partners, the lead sponsors of Azura, and Dr. David Ladipo, Managing Director of Azura said in a joint statement: "ACEI's investment will exert a transformative impact on our business and accelerate Azura's drive to create a flagship, multi-asset, power generation company. The development of Nigeria's electricity supply industry is a vast undertaking that requires a long term commitment from all parties. Together with ACEI, the Federal Government of Nigeria, state governments and our partners and advisers, we are committed to the creation of an indigenous world class business that will provide electricity to the people of Nigeria and, in so doing, will boost the country's industrial growth, its job creation and its social welfare."

The two celebrities would have made a glamorious and smart "power couple" on GRTS but that would be too much for some folks. Smartness and innovation are not welcomed in The Gambia.

Prince Bubacarr Sankanu is a Pan African leader who is a lawyer based in Germany.
He is one of the few young Africans who dream big and pursue their dreams without looking back until they have reached their ultimate goals and one of his dreams "NTI XANNEN Rajon do Televisonka (NXR.tv)" was launched on Tuesday 1st October 2013 to respond to the increasing information hunger of Gambians/Africans and the need for an independent media platform for innovative and liberal thinking.

100 ICONS OF NIGERIA: 1914-2014

To celebrate the Nigeria Centenary next year 2014, Nigerians Report Online, the flagship of citizen journalism in Nigeria will recognize the illustrious patriots who have been the nation builders of modern Nigeria from 1914-2014.  They include icons of democracy and governance, icons of education, icons of medicine, icons of engineering and science, icons of business and industry, icons of public service, icons of sports, icons of arts and culture (including icons of music, icons of movies, icons of literature, icons of beauty and haute couture), icons of Information Technology, icons of journalism and other icons who have also achieved great things in the making of modern Nigeria.

Nigeria has heroes and we should celebrate our heroes, because majority of our children and youths are ignorant of our heroes who should be role models worthy of emulation for their inspiration and motivation to excel and succeed in life and join in the nation building of a New Nigeria in the leadership of Africa among the comity of nations in the world.

We should celebrate the nation builders and not title chasers.
These nation builders are champions who have sacrificed a lot and paid the price, and some in fact paid the supreme price for freedom, peace and unity. That is why I published the The Mandate of MKO Abiola, written by Adeleke O. Adeyemi, aka Mai Nasara, the winner of the $100, 000 Nigeria ;Prize for Literature in 2011 for his book The Missing Clock. "The Mandate of MKO Abiola" is one of the most distributed books on the martyr of June 12.

I am the custodian of a sacred mandate, freely given, which I cannot surrender unless the people so demand, and it is by virtue of this mandate that I say that the  decision of  the Federal Military Government to cancel the election of June 12, 1993 is invidious, unpatriotic  and capable of causing undue and  unnecessary confusion in the country.
~ Chief MKO Abiola on June 12 1994, a year after the military annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election which he won and recorded as the freest presidential election in the history of Nigeria.

It is the first book on MKO Abiola on iTunes.

As our Lord and Messiah Jesus Christ said:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
~  Matthew 5:16, Holy Bible, King James Version (KJV).

You are welcome to nominate these icons and the 100 ICONS OF NIGERIA: 1914-2014 will be published in a book to be released to celebrate the Nigeria Centenary.

~ By Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima, Publisher/Editor, Nigerians Report Online.

When we appreciate and celebrate these great humans God has used to bless Nigeria, we are showing gratitude to the Almighty God and He will increase His blessings and favours in our nation. But when we fail to celebrate them, we are only showing how ungrateful we are and God does not like ungrateful people. So, let us be very glad and grateful and give God all the glory for great things He has done for us through His illustrious sons and daughters in Nigeria as our Lord and Messiah Jesus Christ said:

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Right now Chiwetel Ejiofor (star of Inside Man, American Gangster, Salt, 12 Years a Slave) is trending in Hollywood as one of the best contenders for the Best Actor Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards coming up on Sunday March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre, Angeles, California, for his unforgettable role as "Solomon Northup" in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave, a 2013 British-American epic historical drama.

Lancelot Imasuen (director of Entanglement, Home in Exile, Bent Arrows, A Private Storm, ABCs of Death 2, Invasion 1897) is the buzz of the moment in Nollywood for one of the most ambitious movies in the Nigerian film industry, his historical epic Invasion 1897 based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and how they carted away the priceless ancient artifacts belonging to the kingdom. And he is also trending in Hollywood for being the only African director among the 26 selected directors making the short horror thrillers of The ABCs of Death 2 series.

Zikrem continued: "Did you know that many of the products used on a day-to-day basis by consumers around the world were invented by Africans - the traffic light, the elevator and the pressure cooker?  Obviously, these kinds of ideas have greatly impacted people worldwide and we have noticed that Africa's talented entrepreneurs are growing in numbers and are creating innovative solutions that will propel Africa's future."

     About Kenneth Gyang:

Kenneth Gyang on the set of Cinema Kpatakpata's first feature film, "Confusion Na Wa" with award winning Nollywood hunk OC Ukeje and Ikechukwu Omenaihe.

I have been following the captivating career of Kenneth Gyang as an ambitious young filmmaker since he was 19 when I interviewed him in 2006 for the highly esteemed Black Film Maker magazine, the foremost publication on blacks in the film industry, published in the UK and that interview “Young At Art” is still distributed widely by HighBeam Research and followed by my special focus on THE BEST OF NOLLYWOOD in the same year.

Kenneth Gyang is a young filmmaker in Nigeria and was born in Barkin Ladi of Plateau State, Nigeria. He studied Film Production at the National Film Institute in Jos and screenwriting at Gaston Kaboré's IMAGINE in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Two of his short films as well as a script titled "Game of Life" were selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus 2006 and "Mummy Lagos" was well received as an official competition entry. "Mummy Lagos" was also selected for the Sithengi Talent Campus as part of the Cape Town World Cinema Festival in South Africa. His film "Omule" won Best Documentary Film at the 1st Nigerian Students International Film Festival in 2006 and "Mummy Lagos" also won Best Film at the Nigerian Field Society Awards organized by the German Cultural Centre, Goethe-Institut, in Lagos as well as the Jury Special Mention at the ANIWA Festival in Ghana. Kenneth has worked with the BBC World Service Trust, directing their high quality TV drama "Wetin Dey", which was presented at the International Emmy World Television Festival in New York City, USA.. He has also worked with Communicating For Change as an Associate Producer on "Bayelsian Silhouettes", a series of seven short films on HIV/AIDS and he also co-wrote, produced and directed "Finding Aisha" TV series for the Nigerian production company Televista.

Kenneth Gyang on the definition of Nollywood:

I think this whole issue of ‘Nollywood, no, not Nollywood’ is being stretched to its breaking point so much so that at this year’s FESPACO, the prestigious film festival in Africa, Professor Wole Soyinka presented a paper about it called “A name is more than the tyranny of taste”. He talked about how in Yorubaland a name may mould a child so you don’t find any Yoruba parent giving their babies names that embed evil meanings. Personally I’ll say this, Nollywood followed in the Bollywood/Hollywood bandwagon. When the Indian film industry in Mumbai was tagged Bollywood, no-one cut it some slack. A whole ton of look-alike films were churned out in overwhelming quantity but with time, they started raising their game. In the opposite direction, France is synonymous with art films but you still have tons of popcorn movies emanating from there. For me, the totality of films coming from Nigeria make up what is known as Nollywood and I’ll rather spend my time making films that matter than worry myself with the name of industry.

South Africa fails to deliver Nelson Mandela's education vision

    VADUZ, Liechtenstein, December 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
    http://www.worldreview.info

South Africa is facing an education crisis. It has failed to uphold the dream of former South Africa leader Nelson Mandela - to provide equal opportunity to the nation's young through education, writes World Review author Dr Pauline Dixon, senior lecturer in International Development and Education at the University of Newcastle, UK.

'Mr Mandela, who led the nation from apartheid to democracy, believed that education was key to emancipation, social mobility - and to the future prosperity of South Africa. Yet this principle has still yet to be realised,' she says.

Results from South Africa's Department of Basic Education school monitoring survey in 2011, which looked only at public schools, shows that minimum standards were not met in 14 out of 15 indicators. Main concerns include teaching posts not being filled, the lack of curriculum being covered in a week, and the high number of pupils who are unable to access library facilities and enjoy basic physical infrastructure such as school buildings, grounds, furniture, equipment and apparatus believed essential to impart education.
'The teaching of mathematics in rural and poor schools is the worst in southern and eastern Africa,' says Dr Dixon. 'Children in poorer African countries such as Lesotho and Zambia are out performing children in South Africa. Findings by the Centre for Development and Enterprise show that less than one quarter of Class 6 teachers were able to answer Class 6 maths questions correctly.'
'It is not surprising that between 2000 and 2010 the number of public schools dropped by nine per cent while the number of independent schools increased by more than 44 per cent. The number of pupils enrolled at independent schools has risen by more than 50 per cent in that period.'
South Africa's education system is now seeing an alternative developing - a de facto privatisation of schooling. Studies show that there is a small, but growing low-fee private schooling sector in South Africa.
The growth in independent education is relatively new. But it is displaying innovation and a keenness for people to get involved - driven by two factors - profit and the demand created by the inadequacy of public schooling.

'Some argue that South Africans have forgotten that change can come from the grassroots, from ordinary people acting in their own best interest. But in years to come the expansion and growth of low-cost private schools - through parents voting with their feet - might overcome some of the acquiescence to state domination.'

Famous British Actor Rudolph Walker Replaces Joseph Marcell in Invasion 1897

Famous Caribbean born British Actor Rudolph Walker, OBE, has replaced St. Lucian-born English actor Joseph Marcell in Lancelot Imasuen’s historical epic film Invasion 1897.
“This afternoon we signed Rudolph Walker to play a role in Invasion 1897,” said Lancelot Imasuen Friday December 20, as we met in his busy Lagos studios to discuss the progress of the film and his short horror film for The ABCs of Death 2.
“Joseph Marcell couldn't make our new date for shooting in London, because of his other schedules. We will be filming in London before the end of the month. And Rudolph has always been my first choice to play a special role in Invasion 1897,” he added.
His London based associate producers Joe Ehigiamusoe and Julius Imabe of J2 Konsult Inc, in the UK manage the business of Lancelot Imasuen in Europe.

    Lancelot Imasuen and his associates.

The British actor was the first black actor to appear in a major British TV series for his breakthrough role as Bill in the sitcom Love Thy Neighbour and currently popular for his role as Patrick Truman in the BBC One TV soap opera Eastenders, you can see on BBC1 and BBC3 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and the Sunday Omnibus.

Rudolph Walker is happily married to Dounne Alexander, MBE, an accomplished Caribbean born British spiritual herbalist, publisher, author, motivational speaker, health campaigner and award winning business pioneer, voted one of the 100 most influential black people in British history for the 2000 millennium (with her contribution was recorded by the BBC and is stored in the British National Library for posterity).
Mr. Walker is still very much agile even at 74. And he said: ‘An Actor's life for me is one which keeps you creative; forever developing, growing, flourishing and enriching, yourself and others. Therefore you cannot afford to become complacent or relaxed for too long… hence retirement is never a choice; you simply go on to ‘the end.’
Another popular English actor in the film is Charles "Chucky" Venn known for his roles as Curtis Alexander in Sky One's Dream Team, Tremaine Gidigbi in Footballers' Wives and Ray Dixon in EastEnders.

Invasion 1897 is the most anticipated film to celebrate the Nigeria Centenary in 2014 (modern day Nigeria came into being on January 1, 1914), and to mark the centenary of the death of the great King of Benin, Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, Lancelot Imasuen will host special guests from corporate Nigeria and leading journalists at his Lagos studios on January 14, 2014.

Top Nigerian actors playing lead roles in the epic movie include Charles Inojie, Paul Obazele, Segun arinze, Mac Omoriegbe as Oba Ovonrawmen and the late Justus Esiri in a cameo role.

Did you know that five years before the death of Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, the British Consul-General Moor, who captured, deposed and sent him on exile in Calabar committed suicide in Barnes, Middlesex in 1909. The great Ovonramwen must have cursed him for no one commits such a great sacrilege and escapes the wrath of the Benin Kingdom.

    Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi.

Invasion 1897 is the untold story of the Benin Expedition of 1897 by the United Kingdom force of 1,200 under Admiral Sir Harry Rawson who captured, burned, and looted Benin City, bringing to an end the West African Kingdom of Benin.

19 Mistakes From Last Flight To Abuja

    $

Obi Emelonye's "Last Flight To Abuja"– The full movie (Nollywood Movies 2013) with over 1,493,241 views so far on YouTube is the number one on the Top 10 Most Watched Videos in Nigeria in 2013 excluding Music, but Nollymovies reported the following 19 mistakes in the best selling movie.

The movie opened with radio voice-over of the "Good Morning Nigeria Show" with "Manny and the Angels" on Cool FM, Lagos. In 2006, the Good Morning Nigeria Show was hosted by Dan Foster and not Manny and the Angels.

    Continuity Error:-
As the movie starts a large building is shown and "CNS Headquarters" is written on the screen. When they show the board meeting taking place in the building, Chief Nike (Jide Kosoko) refers to their office as "TNS"

    Other:-
The Flamingo name and logo on the plane is obviously printed on paper and then pasted on the fuselage/body of the plane. How much would re-spraying that part of the plane have cost?

    submitted by @IamNotJuke (twitter)
Continuity Error:- The first time the Captain George (Anthony Monjaro) spoke to the passengers, he wasnt smiling. He says "the weather, a cool 31 degrees celsius...thank you for choosing Flamingo *Airways, enjoy your flight". The second time, while supposedly repeating the SAME SPEECH, he says "The weather in Abuja, a cool 31 degrees celsius...thank you for choosing Flamingo *Airlines, enjoy yourself."
Continuity Error:- Captain George (Anthony Monjaro) radioed the control tower and asked for permission to take off from runway 2 but the plane is shown to have taken off from runway 15.

Continuity Error:- In the first run, Mr Adesola (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) stood up and interrupted the conversation between Suzie (Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde) and David (Jim Iyke) before heading to the toilet. When there's a replay of the SAME SCENE, he goes straight to the toilet without interrupting their conversation.

Factual Error:- Mrs Angela Efe (Chidera Orji) is seen using an iPad as her husband returns home having missed his flight. The first iPad wasn’t released until 2010 which was four years after the movie was supposedly set.
    Continuity Error:-
After the Captain George (Anthony Monjaro) insists to the control tower about an emergency landing, the cabin shows and all of a sudden, there’s no smoke.

    Factual Error:-
Considering how the plane crashed and all the fire, should that many people have survived? The survivors all look in very good shape with just a little dirt.

    Other:-
Obvious sponsorship advertisements over-emphasizing the sponsors' brands. E.g. Cool FM, Diamond Bank, Nigeria Info, Zinox Computers, Wazobia FM.

    Continuity Error:-
The crying girl, Anietie (Abigail Oyinkansola) who refuses to let her dad travel cries in the car, walks away from the car grinning and is seen crying again the second her father stops.

    Other:-
Kevin Efe (Uche Odoputa) practically hands his phone to the thief who supposedly snatches the phone from him while he used it.

Factual Error:- The magazine on which Jimi (Sam Ajibola) signs his autograph for Mukhtar, "Whats Inside Lagos", wasn’t available until 2010.

    Factual Error:-
The Elderly Man (Olumide Bakare) was travelling for a surgery for diabetes. Problem is, diabetes treatment does not require surgery.

    Factual Error:-
Dr. Gina (Rachel Ekiama) checks Charles' temperature with stethoscope. A stethoscope is an acoustic medical device used for listening to internal sounds. A thermometer should have been used to check his temperature. Dr Gina also uses a Blackberry Torch 3 which wasn’t available until 2011.
    submitted by @HandleOfTheYear (twitter)

    Factual Error:-
A car battery is seen being loaded onto the plane. A car battery is a corrosive and is therefore internationally prohibited from being loaded on an airplane.

    Other:-
On their way from the airport Mrs Ime Ibong looks at a police convoy and says "Is that not the governor?" to which her husband replies "that looks like my chairman, Chief Nike". The SUVs they both looked at were tinted. How did they see through the tinted glasses?

    Other:-
As Soibifa (Omalicha Iyasara) struggles with Mr Adesola (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) in the hotel room, she falls on her right hand which is shown to be placed between her head and the broken glass, implying her head had no direct contact with the broken glass table which supposedly killed her.

    Factual Error:-
After all the passengers leave the plane, David (Jim Iyke) tries to help Mr Adesola (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) out, abandons him and runs out as the plane explodes. Now the explosion is shown to have started before David got to the rear exit. An explosion of that magnitude should be enough to kill him. Even if it doesn’t, he should have serious burns and injuries. Right?

On January 1, 2014, Nigeria will be 100 years old (modern day Nigeria came into being on January 1, 1914).But I don't think the federal government is fully prepared for the celebration of the Nigeria Centenary on Wednesday next week, because the Presidency is more occupied with addressing the face-off with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

January 14 is also the centenary of the death of the great King of Benin, Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914. And the great Benin Kingdom led by Oba of Benin,Omo N'Oba,N'Edo Uku Akpolokplolo EREDIAUWA, C.F.R, will be marking the historic day at the palace.

Famous Nollywood filmmaker and one of the most illustrious sons of Benin Kingdom, Lancelot Imasuen will host special guests from corporate Nigeria and leading journalists at his Lagos studios on January 14, 2014 to celebrate Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, the subject of his historical epic film Invasion 1897, currently the most expensive Nigerian film.

Aid continues for people fleeing Nigeria

    24 Dec 2013 02:10 Africa/Lagos

Niger: People fleeing Nigeria grow in number

GENEVA, 23 December 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - People fleeing the conflict in north-east Nigeria continue to arrive in the Diffa area, in south-easternmost Niger, where the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Cross Society of Niger are working to help thousands of people.

"After something of a lull, we have been seeing further population movements in the area,” said Pascal Porchet, deputy head of the ICRC delegation in Niger. “At least 450 people have arrived in Diffa district alone over the past few days."

The displaced people and the host communities are also facing problems caused by the flooding of the Komadougou Yobé River, actually an arm of Lake Chad. The recent floods have destroyed many homes, schools and health-care centres and affected large areas of farmland.

The situation was worrying, Porchet said. In addition to the floods, thousands of displaced people had arrived in the area in just a few months, and poor security conditions had led to a sharp fall in trade with Nigeria. This had aggravated the region's isolation and caused a leap in the prices of basic necessities.

On top of all this, according to estimates published by the Niger government, crop and livestock figures for the year were poorer in the Diffa area than in the rest of the country.

Aid continues for people fleeing Nigeria

Last week, the Niger Red Cross and the ICRC distributed two-month food rations to some 7,500 people (displaced persons, refugees and returnees) in the districts of Diffa, Toumour, Nguelkolo and Chetimari.

"This relief is vital to these people, who have no other means of meeting their food needs," explained Jean-Pierre Nereyabagabo, who coordinates ICRC food relief in Niger.

In addition to this emergency aid, there are also initiatives aimed at making the displaced people less dependent on humanitarian aid. One involves distributing seeds to around a hundred families in Bosso and Tchoukoudjani, to enable them to grow vegetables.

    Support for displaced Fulani nomads

Among the people originally from Niger who have fled the violence in Nigeria are some 1,600 Fulani nomads belonging to the Wodaabe group. They have been receiving regular aid from the ICRC since November 2012.

"They've been forced to flee from Nigeria where they settled over a decade ago, often leaving everything behind," Nereyabagabo explained. "When they returned to Niger, they struggled to rebuild their lives and were living in difficult conditions on the outskirts of Diffa. They depended mainly on the monthly ICRC food aid to survive."

In order to help these people restore their livelihoods, the ICRC is supporting the efforts of the local authorities to relocate them to Modi Wakil, 30 km from Diffa, in Gueskerou district. On 22 November, some 275 Fulani Wodaabe families were able to move to their new village, where the ICRC has already built a well.

Two-month food rations have been distributed to families to get them started. Meanwhile, the ICRC is distributing 900 goats, at least three per household, to enable the nomads to build up their livestock again.

Niger Red Cross helps flood victims

More than 3,000 people affected by the floods received rapid help from the Niger Red Cross in Kessa Kandila, Ajeri, Rouda and Kouloukoura (Chetimari and Diffa districts).

Three hundred and fifty relief parcels, containing tarpaulins, cooking utensils, mosquito nets and clothes, were delivered to flood victims, along with food rations for a month. Work being carried out by the ICRC to construct six water points equipped with manual pumps is now nearing completion. These new facilities will ensure permanent access to drinking water and reduce health risks. One hundred and fifty water treatment kits have also been distributed.
